Principal's Message
Happy October to all our CUB families, September was an incredibly busy month for our school community. A few of you participated in our listening sessions, Meet the Teacher, /Title I evening, board meetings and a solutions-based meeting aimed at supporting families affected by the removal of a bus stop. A big thank you to the teacher volunteers, parent and community members who helped launch an unofficial Walking School Bus program on short notice. We’ve had parent volunteers who came with solution based ideas to help support our families; volunteering for the Walking School Bus or informing us about the free Community Van through King County Metro. As we journey through construction, our Cubs have truly embraced this change and discovered joy in a variety of activities, showing their remarkable ability to adapt and make the best of any situation. Ms. Krista and Ms. Sona has observed students engaging in games such as:
To enhance outdoor activities, we have purchased new games funded by Capital Projects including Connect Four, checkers, portable hopscotch, skip ball, and tic-tac-toe. Additionally, we have a few more games on backorder. |

Our 4th and 5th graders have also brought back art, coloring, and Cats Cradle to recess. And yes, we do offer an indoor recess option! That’s a brief summary of our first month, read on for more information about the happenings in our school. Celebrating Our Community:
Join us for the following community events this month:
Thank you for your continued support and engagement in our school community! Geetha George-Shapiro

Meet Nurse Rachel
My name is Rachel Ogurkow and I am excited to be part of the Kenmore Cubs! I have been a Pediatric Nurse for 15 years and have been a Substitute Nurse in Northshore School District for the past 3 years. I look forward to meeting your students and partnering with families for any medical needs here at Kenmore Elementary.
Vision & Hearing Screening at Kenmore Elementary
Each year in Northshore schools, students in grades Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 receive hearing and vision screenings. We are currently scheduled for vision and hearing screenings on October 10th. If you would like to exempt your child from either of these health screenings, please contact the school nurse.
It is important to understand that these are basic screenings, and are designed to identify students who may require further testing. They are not intended to replace regular exams by qualified health care providers. A student who does not pass any screening will be rechecked in a few weeks, and you will be notified only if there are concerns after the second screening.
Vision screening uses the PlusOptix. The PlusOptix is an autorefractor that takes a measurement of the refraction of the eyes. The result is a baseline refraction measurement. The illumination technique used by Plusoptix, is totally harmless to the child's eyes. If your child wears glasses or contact lenses for distance or near vision, please be sure they have them on the screening day.
If your child has a hearing loss and is being followed by a healthcare provider or specialist and you do not wish for them to participate in the screening, please let the school nurse know. If you have concerns about hearing loss and school accommodations, contact your student’s teacher or the school nurse.

KE Modernization Updates
This past week, the construction team swiftly completed the Geopier installation in just a day and a half. While students had the option to stay indoors for recess, outdoor play continued to be their favorite activity.

Reporting an Absence in ParentVUE
New Process for Reporting an Absence: 4 Simple Steps
We have a new, easy way for families to let our school know when their student is absent! While we know regular attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare your student for success, we also know that sometimes students must miss school for a variety of reasons. Next time that happens for your family, let us know through ParentVUE:
- Login to ParentVUE
- Click the “Report Absence” button next to the name of your absent student
- Fill in the fields with the date(s) of the absence and provide an explanation
- Click to submit, automatically notifying the school of the absence
Learn more or view step-by-step images and instructions. You can use this method to report an absence of up to 4 days. As a reminder, an absence of 5 days or longer requires families to submit a Notice of Pre-Arranged Extended Absence Form.
