Principal's Message

Happy New Year KE Cub Families,

We hope you had an enjoyable time off to celebrate or simply relax with your loved ones. I always do appreciate this time off to reflect on many things. As I write this I am still in the inquiry of what that will look like in the form of a resolution or word.

For now, we are back at it with an unwritten chapter ahead of us. The Northshore School Board voted to place three measures on the February 10, 2026 ballot – an Educational Programs and Operations Levy renewal, a Technology Levy renewal, and a Capital Projects Bond. These three measures work together to provide funding that supports every part of our Northshore learning environment.

Educational Programs & Operations Levy renewal

Funding from the Educational Programs and Operations Levy renewal directly supports our students and staff, providing salaries and additional staffing above what the state considers “basic education," provides the majority of funding for athletics and extracurricular activities, including music and performing arts, and funds programs that support student learning, like IB, Special Education, and language services.

Capital Projects Bond

School districts do not receive any funding for building maintenance, repairs, or construction and must rely on local, voter-approved bonds to fund these projects. While Kenmore benefited from the 2022 bond and recently opened our new building and inclusive playground – there are still a number of building improvement projects that need to be completed in the older part of the school. The February 10, 2026 bond would benefit Kenmore by installing a turf field and seismic retrofitting of our older buildings to increase safety. We will also benefit from the districtwide safety and security improvements (like access controls, intrusion alarms, and visual indicators) and technology infrastructure improvements (like updated wireless networks and fiber replacement that will support our network stability).

Technology Levy Renewal

The Technology Levy renewal pays for support, licenses, and updates for student, staff, and classroom computers, training, and digital learning curriculum. Funding also ensures our data security systems are up to date and our operations systems, like payroll, food services, transportation, and phones are operating smoothly.

There will be opportunities to engage with district personnel to hear about the upcoming Levy Renewal and Bond Information meetings. Another announcement will be made once I receive confirmation on these dates.

For now, I am including the Informational One-pager about the Levy Renewals and Bond for your reference.

In exciting news, African Drumming practices begin tomorrow, led by our talented 5th graders, Avery and Diya!

Practices are held every Tuesday from 8:20 to 8:50 am. We still have a few spots left, so if you have a 4th or 5th grader interested, please sign up for it by clicking on this link!

May the year bring exciting possibilities your way!

Warmly,

Ms. George-Shapiro
Principal

Monthly Focus - Empathy

 Our Monthly Focus

   Dear Families,

This year we are using PurposeFull People, a program that teaches       skills to help students be successful in school and in life. We just     finished     up last month’s focus on Gratitude and are moving on with our focus on   Empathy

Empathy Overview

This month’s focus is Empathy. One way to think about Empathy is “understanding and connecting with other people’s feelings.” Empathy is a practice that can help us grow strong relationships.

In the classrooms

For the next month, each classroom will be focusing on different aspects of what it means to show empathy. Below you will find the overall focus for each grade.

Kindergarten: Listening to others
First Grade: Being a good friend
Second Grade: Conflict resolution with empathy
Third Grade: Perspective taking
Fourth/Fifth Grade: Conflict resolution and leadership with empathy

Family Connections
Conversations Starters:
  1. Why do you think it is important to practice Empathy with our friends?
  2. Is it hard for you to share how you feel with others? Why or why not?

Activities:

  • Empathy is understanding and connecting with other people’s feelings. Schedule a family movie night so that you can specifically watch for feelings and emotions. Let everyone know that you’d like them to point out how the characters in the show are feeling and that you will pause periodically to discuss Empathy. As emotions are identified, invite one another to Empathize by sharing about a time they felt that way or imagining how they might be feeling in that moment.

  • Find a time to sit together and celebrate all the ways you have seen each other practice Empathy. Remember to practice Empathy as you listen to each other.
