Principal's Message

February was a brief month, made even shorter by delays, snowfall, and our mid-winter break. As a community, we encountered various challenges together.

While we feel a profound sadness from the loss of Ms. Goodmon, we also carry a deep sense of gratitude for the kind and generous support we've experienced over the past week. Ms. Goodmon's far-reaching impact has touched our community and strengthened our bonds, reminding us of the strong connections we share with our middle and high school families. We, the students and staff, will miss her very much.

In the spirit of resilience, we turn our attention to March. March marks the beginning of state assessment season. This month, our English Language Learners will be participating in the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessments (WIDA).

Please take note of the important assessment dates starting May 6th. The Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) will be for 5th grade only, while grades 3-5 will participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA). Our testing coordinators are finalizing the schedules, which will be shared in the upcoming weeks.

This month is packed with great opportunities, including Title I sponsored events such as Coffee & Conversations, Parent Child Math Classes, the SEL Series, and our PTA organized STEAM fair. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these exciting events!

We would like to take a moment to acknowledge and honor the observances of Ramadan for our Muslim families, Lent (Ash Wednesday/Shrove) for our Christian families and Holi for our Hindu families. These special observances serve as beautiful reminders of the importance of community, reflection, and the support we offer to one another. Together, we can celebrate the values of understanding that unite us all.

International Women’s Day is just around the corner— March 8th. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all the incredible women, both past and present, who have influenced my life, including my beloved mother, mentors, and friends. I hope you can find a moment to celebrate the remarkable women who have made a difference in your life as well!

Ms. George-Shapiro
Principal

Kindergarten registration    Our Monthly Focus

Social Emotional Learning with PurposeFull People

Dear Families,

This year we are using PurposeFull People, a program that teaches skills to help students be successful in school and in life. We just wrapped up our third focus on Perseverance and are moving forward with our next focus, Honesty

Honesty Overview

We are looking forward to focusing on Honesty this month! One way to think about Honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing Honesty helps strengthen our relationships and even reduces stress.

In the classrooms

For the following month each classroom will be focusing on different aspects of what it means to show Honesty. Below you will find the overall focus for each grade.

Kindergarten: Naming our emotions.
First Grade: Emotion awareness.
Second Grade: Emotion regulation
Third Grade: Sharing their emotions and advocating for themselves.
Fourth/Fifth Grade: Positive self-talk and stress management.

Family Connections
Conversations Starters:
  1. Can you share or show what it means to practice Honesty?
  2. When you are Honest, how does it make you feel? Why?
  3. Share with me how being Honest with ourselves can help us to be more confident, calm, or focused.

Activities:

  • Review Honesty as a family! Honesty is being truthful in what you say and do. Discuss the importance of being Honest and work together to create a family Honesty pledge. Create and decorate a sign together that explains what Honesty means in your family. Have each family member sign the pledge and choose a spot to display it. Refer back to the pledge as a reminder to be Honest and to celebrate when Honesty is practiced!
